If you find yourself snacking on an extra bag of chips (or three) before you doze off for the evening, you may want to guzzle a little more aqua. Not only can water keep our bodies functioning at their optimal levels, but apparently plain old water can help you eat less, too. A new study has shown that increasing your daily water consumption by just 1 percent could help you ditch those extra calories.
The study was conducted by University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor, Ruopeng An. Professor An examined data from 18, 300 U.S adults who were surveyed by the National Center for Health Statistics between 2005 and 2012.
According to the survey, individuals consumed about 4.2 cups of plain water per day. This accounted for roughly 30 perfect of the total dietary water intake. The average calorie intake was around 2,000 calories, in which 125 calories came from sugar-sweetened drinks and 432 calories came from snacks such as pastries, desserts, and snack mixes.
The researchers found that two to three cups of extra water per day helped lower total calories by almost 200 calories. They also found that sodium, sugar and cholesterol levels decreased as well:
- Sodium levels dropped by 78 to 235 milligrams per day.
- Sugar levels dropped by 5 grams to 18 grams per day.
- Cholesterol consumption dropped by 7 to 21 milligrams per day.
Professor An commented on the results by saying, “This finding indicates that it might be sufficient to design and deliver universal nutrition interventions and education campaigns that promote plain water consumption in replacement of beverages with calories in diverse population subgroups without profound concerns about message and strategy customization.”
Water may not stave off a raging appetite, but according to this study, a few extra cups of water could stop you from nipping at those chips you didn’t want to eat.
